Uruguayan Civil War
The Uruguayan Civil War, known as the Guerra Grande, was fought from 1839 to 1851 between the Colorados of Fructuoso Rivera and the Blancos of Manuel Oribe. Oribe was backed by the Argentine ruler Juan Manuel de Rosas, while the Colorados had support at times from Brazil, France, Britain and Italian volunteers under Giuseppe Garibaldi. Montevideo withstood a siege of nearly nine years, and the war ended in 1851 with no victor.
