Colorado Party (Uruguay)

1836 · 19th century · Also known as Partido Colorado

The Colorado Party is one of Uruguay's two traditional parties, founded in 1836 by supporters of Fructuoso Rivera. Allied with the liberal and urban interests of Montevideo, it fought the Blancos in the Guerra Grande of 1839–1851 and held power almost continuously from 1865 to 1959, notably under José Batlle y Ordóñez. Its most recent president was Jorge Batlle, from 2000 to 2005.
