Fructuosus of Tarragona

d. 259 · 3rd century · Also known as Saint Fructuosus

Fructuosus was bishop of Tarraco, the capital of Hispania Tarraconensis, and a Christian martyr. During the persecution under the emperor Valerian he was burned alive with his deacons Augurius and Eulogius in the city's amphitheatre in January 259. The account of his martyrdom is one of the earliest testimonies of Christianity in Spain, and a church was later built in the amphitheatre in his memory.
