Donghak

1860 · 19th century · Also known as Eastern Learning

Donghak ('Eastern Learning') is a Korean religious movement founded in 1860 by Choe Je-u. It combined Confucian, Buddhist, Daoist and shamanist ideas with worship of a supreme god, and it presented itself as a native alternative to Catholicism. Its message of equality and renewal appealed to peasants suffering under late Joseon rule, and it inspired the peasant revolution of 1894. In 1905 the movement was renamed Cheondogyo.
