Imo Incident

1882 · 19th century · Also known as Imo Mutiny

The Imo Incident was a mutiny by unpaid soldiers in Seoul in July 1882. Angered by rice rations that were late and spoiled, and by favour shown to a new Japanese-trained unit, they attacked officials and the Japanese legation, and Queen Min fled the palace. Her rival the Heungseon Daewongun briefly returned to power until Chinese troops restored order and took him to China, which tightened its hold on Korea.
