Imo River

The Imo River is a river of south-eastern Nigeria, about 240 km long, that flows through Igboland to the Atlantic near Opobo. In the 19th century it was a key route for palm oil from the Igbo interior to the coast. In 1870 Jaja founded Opobo near its mouth, cutting off Bonny from the interior markets. Imo State, created in 1976, is named after it.
