Jaja of Opobo

c. 1821–1891 · 19th century · Also known as King Jaja

Jaja of Opobo was a merchant king in the Niger Delta. Born in Igboland and sold as a boy into slavery in Bonny, he rose to head the Anna Pepple trading house and in 1869 founded the Kingdom of Opobo, which took control of much of the palm oil trade. He resisted British commercial control until the consul Harry Johnston deported him in 1887; he died in 1891 while returning from exile.
