Donghak Peasant Revolution

1894–1895 · 19th century · Also known as Donghak Rebellion

The Donghak Peasant Revolution was a rising of Korean peasants in 1894, led by followers of the Donghak religion such as Jeon Bong-jun, against corruption, heavy taxes and foreign influence. When the Joseon court asked China for troops, Japan also sent forces, leading to the First Sino-Japanese War. Japanese and government troops crushed the revolt by early 1895.
