Duchy of Naples

661–1137 · 7th century · Also known as Byzantine Duchy of Naples

The Duchy of Naples was a Byzantine province on the Bay of Naples that became a largely independent state under its own dukes in the 8th century, while nominally recognising the emperor. It resisted the Lombards of Benevento and Arab raiders. Amalfi and Sorrento broke away from it in the 9th century, and the Normans under Roger II absorbed it in 1137.
