Đurađ I Balšić

d. 1378 · 14th century

Đurađ I Balšić was lord of Zeta, roughly modern Montenegro, from 1362 to 1378, the most capable of the three Balšić brothers who made Zeta independent as the Serbian Empire broke up. He fought rival lords such as Nikola Altomanović and gained part of his lands after Nikola's defeat in 1373, extending Balšić power along the Adriatic coast.
