Dzud

Dzud is a Mongolian term for a catastrophic winter, when heavy snow, ice or extreme cold prevents livestock from grazing and causes mass deaths of animals. Severe dzud and droughts in the first century BCE killed great numbers of livestock and brought famine to the steppe, contributing to the weakening of the Xiongnu Empire.
