Eadred
Eadred (c. 923–955) was king of the English from 946 to 955, a son of Edward the Elder and younger brother of Æthelstan and Edmund. His reign was dominated by the struggle for York, where Northumbrian leaders accepted Norse kings such as Eric Bloodaxe; in 948 he ravaged Northumbria and burned Ripon. After Eric's expulsion in 954 Northumbria was finally absorbed into the English kingdom.
