Edict of Torda

1568 · 16th century · Also known as Edict of Turda

The Edict of Torda was a decree of the diet of the Eastern Hungarian Kingdom, meeting at Torda (Turda) in Transylvania in January 1568 under John Sigismund Zápolya. It allowed each community to choose preachers according to its own beliefs and forbade persecution on grounds of religion, at a time when anti-Trinitarian teaching was spreading at the prince's court. It is often cited as one of the earliest European laws of religious toleration.
