Edict of Union

1532 · 16th century · Also known as Edict of Union of 1532

The Edict of Union, issued by King Francis I in August 1532 after a request from the Estates of Brittany meeting at Vannes, permanently joined the Duchy of Brittany to the Kingdom of France. It guaranteed Breton privileges, such as the consent of the Estates to taxation, which lasted until the French Revolution. It completed a process begun by the marriages of Duchess Anne of Brittany to two French kings.
