John of Montfort

d. 1283 · 13th century

John of Montfort was lord of Tyre in the crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem from 1270, succeeding his father Philip of Montfort, who was murdered by an Assassin. He kept the city's trade alive through truces with the Mamluk sultans. After his death his heirs held Tyre until the Mamluks took it without resistance in 1291.
