State
Kingdom of Jerusalem
The Kingdom of Jerusalem was a Crusader state established in the Levant after the First Crusade captured Jerusalem in 1099. Its army was decisively defeated by Saladin, founder of the Ayyubid Empire, at the Battle of Hattin in 1187, after which Jerusalem itself fell. A reduced kingdom survived along the coast until the late thirteenth century.
