Saladin

d. 1193 · 12th century · Also known as Salah al-Din Yusuf ibn Ayyub, Salah al-Din

Saladin (Salah al-Din Yusuf ibn Ayyub) was a Kurdish Muslim military leader and the founder of the Ayyubid Empire, who died in 1193. He became vizier of Fatimid Egypt in 1169, ended the Fatimid Caliphate and united Egypt and Syria under his rule. His victory at the Battle of Hattin in 1187 and recapture of Jerusalem made him a celebrated figure, though accounts of the Ayyubid Empire note that his division of territory among relatives prepared the empire's fragmentation.
