Combat of the Thirty

1351 · 14th century · Part of the War of the Breton Succession

The Combat of the Thirty was an arranged fight on 26 March 1351, during the War of the Breton Succession, between thirty knights and squires from each side. Champions of Charles of Blois led by Jean de Beaumanoir met men of the Anglo-Breton garrison of Ploërmel under Robert Bemborough at a site between Josselin and Ploërmel. The Franco-Breton side won, and the fight became a celebrated example of chivalry.
