Edmund Hillary was a New Zealand mountaineer and explorer who, with the Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, made the first confirmed ascent of Mount Everest on 29 May 1953. Through the Himalayan Trust he built schools and hospitals for the Sherpa people of Nepal, and he appears on New Zealand's five-dollar note.
