Edmund Ironside

c. 990–1016 · 11th century · Also known as Edmund II of England

Edmund Ironside was king of the English for seven months in 1016, the son of Æthelred the Unready. He resisted Cnut's invasion vigorously, earning his nickname, but was defeated at the Battle of Assandun in October 1016. By the agreement that followed he kept Wessex while Cnut took the lands north of the Thames, but Edmund died on 30 November 1016 and Cnut became king of all England.
