Eichsfeld

The Eichsfeld is a hilly historical region in central Germany, now divided between Thuringia and Lower Saxony, around the towns of Heiligenstadt and Duderstadt. Acquired piece by piece by the archbishops of Mainz from the 11th century, it remained their territory until 1802 and stayed a Catholic island among Protestant lands, a character it keeps today.
