Eiso

1229–1299 · 13th century

Eiso is a semi-legendary king of Okinawa, said in Ryukyuan chronicles to have reigned at Urasoe from 1260 to 1299 as founder of the Eiso dynasty. The chronicles describe him as a wise ruler who received tribute from outlying islands, surveyed the land and built a Buddhist temple after the arrival of a Japanese monk. His line is said to have ruled until 1350, when Satto came to power.
