Emperor Xiaowu of Northern Wei

510–535 · 6th century · Also known as Yuan Xiu

Emperor Xiaowu (Yuan Xiu) was the last emperor of the undivided Northern Wei, placed on the throne in 532 by the general Gao Huan. In 534 he fled from Gao Huan's control at Luoyang to the general Yuwen Tai at Chang'an, who had him poisoned early in 535. His flight split the dynasty into the Eastern Wei, controlled by Gao Huan, and the Western Wei, controlled by Yuwen Tai.
