Ephialtes (Athenian statesman)

d. 461 BCE · 5th century BCE

Ephialtes was an Athenian democratic politician who in 462/461 BCE carried reforms that stripped the aristocratic Council of the Areopagus of most of its political and judicial powers, transferring them to the Council of Five Hundred, the Assembly and the popular courts. He was assassinated soon afterwards, and his associate Pericles became the leading figure of the democracy.
