Pericles

c. 495–429 BCE · 5th century BCE

Pericles was an Athenian statesman and general who dominated the democracy from the 450s until his death in 429 BCE. He used the tribute of the Delian League, whose treasury had been moved to Athens, to fund the building programme of the Acropolis, including the Parthenon. He led Athens into the Peloponnesian War against Sparta and died of the plague that struck the besieged city.
