Epicurus

341–270 BCE · 3rd century BCE

Epicurus was a Greek philosopher, born on Samos to Athenian settlers, who founded the Epicurean school. After teaching at Mytilene and Lampsacus he settled in Athens around 306 BCE and founded his community, the Garden. He taught that the universe consists of atoms and void, that the gods do not intervene in human affairs, and that the goal of life is tranquillity and freedom from pain.
