Eupalinos

6th century BCE · 6th century BCE · Also known as Eupalinos of Megara

Eupalinos of Megara was a Greek engineer of the sixth century BCE who built the aqueduct tunnel on Samos for the tyrant Polycrates. He had the tunnel dug from both ends through Mount Kastro, and the two teams met almost exactly in the middle, a feat of surveying admired by Herodotus. He is one of the first engineers in history known by name.
