Colaeus

fl. c. 638 BCE · 7th century BCE · Also known as Kolaios

Colaeus was a Samian merchant whose voyage is told by Herodotus. Around 638 BCE, bound for Egypt, his ship was driven west by storms through the Strait of Gibraltar to Tartessos in southern Spain, then an untouched market, and he returned with an enormous profit. He dedicated a tenth of it at the Heraion of Samos as a great bronze cauldron decorated with griffins' heads.
