Eritrean War of Independence

1961–1991 · 20th century

The Eritrean War of Independence was a thirty-year struggle by Eritrean nationalist fronts against Ethiopia, which had annexed Eritrea in 1962. Begun by the Eritrean Liberation Front in 1961, it was carried to victory by the Eritrean People's Liberation Front, which took Asmara in May 1991 as the Derg regime collapsed. Eritrea became formally independent after a referendum in 1993.
