Battle of Afabet

1988 · 20th century · Part of the Eritrean War of Independence

The Battle of Afabet was fought in March 1988 around the town of Afabet in northern Eritrea, where the Eritrean People's Liberation Front overran the headquarters of the Ethiopian army's Nadew Command. Several Ethiopian divisions were destroyed and large quantities of Soviet-supplied weapons captured. The victory shifted the balance of the Eritrean War of Independence decisively in the rebels' favour.
