Eucratides I

r. c. 170–145 BCE · 2nd century BCE · Also known as Eucratides the Great

Eucratides I was a Greco-Bactrian king who seized power around 170 BCE, overthrowing the Euthydemid dynasty and fighting the Indo-Greek kings south of the Hindu Kush. He issued some of the finest Hellenistic coins, including the largest gold coin of antiquity, a twenty-stater piece. He was murdered around 145 BCE, reportedly by his own son, and soon afterwards Bactria fell to nomad invaders.
