Eurocommunism
Eurocommunism was a trend among West European communist parties in the 1970s and 1980s, led by the Italian party under Enrico Berlinguer and the Spanish party under Santiago Carrillo. Eurocommunists claimed independence from the Soviet Union and accepted parliamentary democracy and civil liberties. The Soviet suppression of the Prague Spring in 1968 did much to inspire the movement.
