Ewuakpe

c. 1700–1712 · 18th century · Also known as Oba Ewuakpe

Ewuakpe was an Oba of Benin whose reign, c. 1700–1712, saw a civil war that brought the Benin Empire close to collapse. The palace was besieged and the monarchy nearly abolished, and some accounts say the Oba was reduced to farming for his own food. He is credited with eventually restoring respect for the kingship.
