Felipe Santiago Salaverry

1806–1836 · 19th century

Felipe Santiago Salaverry was a Peruvian general who seized power in 1835 and ruled as Supreme Chief of Peru. He resisted the intervention of the Bolivian president Andrés de Santa Cruz, who had come to the aid of Luis José de Orbegoso. Defeated at the Battle of Socabaya in February 1836, he was captured and shot at Arequipa, clearing the way for the Peru–Bolivian Confederation.
