First Shō dynasty

1406–1469 · 15th century · Also known as First Sho dynasty

The First Shō dynasty ruled the kingdom of Chūzan and then a unified Ryukyu from 1406 to 1469. It was founded when Shō Hashi installed his father Shō Shishō as king, and it completed the unification of Okinawa in 1429. After Shō Hashi's death a series of short reigns and internal conflicts weakened it, and on the death of Shō Toku the treasurer Kanemaru took power as Shō En.
