First Stadtholderless Period

1650–1672 · 17th century

The First Stadtholderless Period was the era from 1650 to 1672 when the leading provinces of the Dutch Republic left the office of stadtholder vacant after the death of William II of Orange. Government was led by the regents of Holland under Grand Pensionary Johan de Witt, who favoured trade and kept the house of Orange from power. It ended in the Disaster Year of 1672, when the French invasion brought William III to power.
