First Toungoo Empire

1510–1599 · 16th century · Also known as First Toungoo dynasty

The First Toungoo Empire was the Burmese state founded by the dynasty of Toungoo, which under Tabinshwehti and Bayinnaung reunited Burma in the 16th century. At its height under Bayinnaung it ruled the Shan states, Lan Na, Ayutthaya and Manipur. Overstretched and weakened by revolts, it collapsed by 1599 and was followed by the Restored Toungoo Kingdom.
