Fort Frederik Hendrik

1638 · 17th century

Fort Frederik Hendrik was the first Dutch settlement on Mauritius, founded by the Dutch East India Company in 1638 at Grand Port on the island's south-east coast. Named after the stadtholder Frederick Henry, it supplied passing ships with timber, meat and water. The Dutch abandoned it in 1710, and its excavated ruins are now part of a museum site at Vieux Grand Port.
