Grand Port

Also known as Mahébourg Bay

Grand Port is a large bay and harbour on the south-east coast of Mauritius, on which the town of Mahébourg now stands. The Dutch East India Company built its first settlement, Fort Frederik Hendrik, there in 1638. In August 1810 a French squadron defeated a British force in the Battle of Grand Port, the only French naval victory of the Napoleonic Wars commemorated on the Arc de Triomphe, months before Britain took the island.
