Maurice of Nassau, Prince of Orange from 1618, was stadtholder of Holland and Zeeland from 1585 and later of most other provinces of the Dutch Republic. A son of William the Silent, he reformed the army with his cousin William Louis, introducing regular drill, smaller units and volley fire, and with Simon Stevin he recaptured many towns from Spain in the 1590s.
