Fort Rosalie

1716 · 18th century

Fort Rosalie was a French fort built in 1716 on the bluffs of the lower Mississippi River at present-day Natchez, Mississippi, in the colony of Louisiana. A French settlement and tobacco plantations grew around it on Natchez land. In November 1729 the Natchez rose and killed most of the French settlers there, and French reprisals over the following years destroyed the Natchez as an independent people.
