Fort Ross
Fort Ross was a Russian settlement on the coast of northern California, north of San Francisco, founded by the Russian-American Company in 1812. It was meant to grow food for the Alaskan colonies and to hunt sea otters, but it never became profitable and was sold to John Sutter in 1841. It is now a state historic park.
