Fort San Marcos de Apalache
Fort San Marcos de Apalache was a Spanish fort at the junction of the Wakulla and St. Marks rivers in northern Florida, first built in 1679 to protect the Apalachee missions and their port. Rebuilt several times, it was held by the British from 1763 to 1783 and briefly captured by William Augustus Bowles in 1800. Andrew Jackson seized it in 1818 during the First Seminole War, and its site is now a state park.
