First Seminole War

1817–1818 · 19th century

The First Seminole War was a conflict of 1817 to 1818 in which American forces under Andrew Jackson invaded Spanish Florida against the Seminole and Black Seminoles. Jackson burned towns, seized the Spanish posts of St. Marks and Pensacola and executed two British traders. The campaign helped persuade Spain to cede Florida to the United States in the Adams-Onís Treaty of 1819.
