Black Seminoles

Also known as Seminole Maroons

The Black Seminoles were people of African descent, many of them escaped slaves from Georgia and the Carolinas, who lived alongside the Seminole in Florida. They kept their own villages, paid tribute to Seminole leaders and fought with them against the United States. After removal some settled in Indian Territory, while others moved to Mexico and Texas.
