Kodiak Island is a large island off the south coast of Alaska, home of the Alutiiq people. In 1784 Grigory Shelikhov founded the first permanent Russian settlement in America at Three Saints Bay there, and the town of Kodiak was the capital of Russian America until 1808, when the headquarters moved to New Archangel (Sitka).
