Aleut

Also known as Unangan, Aleut people

The Aleut, or Unangan, are the Indigenous people of the Aleutian Islands and the western Alaska Peninsula, skilled sea hunters in skin kayaks. From the 1740s Russian fur traders forced them to hunt sea otters, and violence and disease greatly reduced their numbers. Many converted to Orthodox Christianity, which remains strong among them.
