Fort William, Kolkata

c. 1700; rebuilt 1758–1781 · 18th century

Fort William is a fortress on the east bank of the Hooghly in Kolkata, India, named after King William III. The English East India Company built the first fort around 1700 as the seat of its Bengal Presidency; after the Battle of Plassey a much larger fort was built nearby, completed in 1781. It gave its name to the presidency and today houses the Indian Army's Eastern Command.
