Francesco Foscari

1373–1457 · 15th century

Francesco Foscari was Doge of Venice from 1423 to 1457, the longest reign of any doge. He led the republic into long wars against Milan that won Brescia and Bergamo and carried Venice's mainland frontier to the Adda. In 1457, after the exile of his son Jacopo, the Council of Ten forced him to abdicate, and he died a week later.
