In 1650 he sent settlers from Barbados to the Suriname River, founding the colony known as Willoughbyland, which soon had several dozen sugar plantations worked by enslaved Africans. He died in 1666 when his fleet was wrecked by a hurricane in the Caribbean, and the colony fell to the Dutch the next year.
